October 29, 2011: Zachary Richard in concert in Saint John

The world renowned and multi-faceted Cajun singer, composer, song-writer, poet, children book writer, television documentary collaborator (producer, music director and narrator), environmentalist and promoter of the preservation and defense of the French language in Louisiana and North America and of the “Cadian” and Acadian identity, Zachary Richard gave a wonderful concert at the Centre Samuel de Champlain, in Saint John, on October 29, 2011.

Deeply rooted in his native Louisiana, the style of Zachary Richard borrows from the rich diversity of that region (Cajun and Zydeco) to extend to blues, Acadian and American folk music. It becomes an absolutely unique mix of all the diverse influences encountered along his rich artistic journey that has spanned more than five decades. The style alternates between lively rhythms, melodies, emotions, fun, pure poetry and activism with beautifully crafted lyrics dealing with far-ranging themes, with a subtle dose of seriousness and irreverence. He has been described as the most American of the French songwriters and the most French of the American songwriters!

Mixing his music with his talent for storytelling, Zachary Richard created an intimate and rich atmosphere, with his accompanying guitarist, on the stage of the Theatre Louis Vermeersch, with a public already fully acquired and ready to sing along his most famous compositions.

After the concert, it was a pleasure to meet Zachary Richard in his dressing room, along with his wife, Claude Thomas, originally from France, and also very warm and approachable.
