CE 1023
Statics for Engineers
(Winter)
Forces and moments are introduced with vector algebra, followed by the application of equilibrium conditions for particles and rigid bodies.  Emphasis is placed on the use of free body diagrams (FBD’s) to analyze trusses, frames and machines, as well as internal member forces (bending moment and shear force diagrams). Additional topics include friction, centroids, and moments of inertia. Analysis of problems is largely scalar based with some exposure to vector based solutions.

Structural Steel Design I
(Fall)
Introduction to the National Building Code of Canada, loads on structures, limit states design concepts, and the use of the CSA S16 steel handbook. Properties of structural steel materials and shapes. Design of steel structure components for ultimate and serviceability limit states. Design topics include tension members, compression members, flexure members, and connections.
CE 5003
Structural Dynamics
(Winter)
Dynamic equilibrium of structural engineering problems with topics including linear dynamics, discrete and continuous systems, free and forced vibration, transient response using numerical integration and Duhamel’s integral, and modal analysis of multi-degree-of-freedom systems. Practical problems exploring structures under dynamic loads such as earthquake, wind, and blast are covered.

This course is offered concurrent with CE 5003 with additonal self directed study for graduate students.
