A Chronology of the Development of Women's Studies in Canada

In the early 1970s, activist scholars at several universities in Canada began developing and teaching Women’s Studies courses.
Some were offered for credit, some not; some were team taught, others were taught by individual faculty
members. Some were interdisciplinary, while others were developed within existing departments, such as
Sociology, Psychology, English, French, Economics, and History. The earliest Women’s Studies courses
(interdisciplinary and discipline-based) and Women’s Studies programs in Canada evolved at the following
institutions in a series of steps.
