Introduction:
Lesbians, Gay Men, and the Canadian Military

ENGLISH /

Since 1997, in collaboration with Lynne Gouliquer, I have been involved with a longitudinal research project investigating the experiences of lesbian and gay male military members and those of their partners. Little is known about their stories and experiences and our research aims to fill this gap. The initial purpose of the study was to document the life-stories of lesbian servicewomen and their partners. This is still ongoing but since then, the project has grown. We are now seeking and including the stories of 1) gay male servicemen and their partners, and 2) gay male and lesbian military members who were released for reasons of homosexuality and the stories of their partners at the time.

We feel that the viewpoints of past, present, and released gay and lesbian service members and those of their partners will provide a richer and deeper understanding of Canadian military history. It will provide a context to the changes that have been occurring in the Canadian Armed Forces dealing with the “political question” of “homosexuals” in the military.
