I came to UNB in 1978 after receiving my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from West Virginia University. My research and teaching interests have been primarily in the area of human sexuality. I find human sexuality to be a particularly exciting field. Despite the fact that sexuality is such an important part of our lives, there has been relatively little research in the area. As a result, there are many, many important questions that remain to be answered. Over the years, I have collaborated with a number of excellent graduate and undergraduate students on a variety of research topics. We also receive help on our research from other members of the UNB Human Sexuality Research Group. The Research Group meets regularly to problem-solve about various research projects as well as to discuss issues related to sexuality research, sex education, and sex therapy. The results of our research typically have important practical implications for the day-to-day lives of individuals, for the work of sex therapists, and for sex education by parents and in the schools. In terms of my other activities, I am a licensed clinical psychologist, and a substantial part of my private practice involves providing sex therapy to individuals and couples who are experiencing sexual difficulties. I teach an undergraduate course in human sexuality as well as a graduate seminar on the assessment and treatment of sexual problems, in addition to other courses. I am a co-author on the most popular undergraduate human sexuality textbook, Understanding Human Sexuality, now in its 6th edition. I have been Chair of the Department of Psychology since July 2003.
