In the following chapters, we will use the GIS Editor to learn methods of editing geographic data. To open the Editor, click on the CARIS Editor icon on the CARIS Suite

and select the file called FTON.DES

The Editor is different from the Information Manager that we have used so far in the following ways.

o The Editor allows you to change the database while the Information Manager does not.

NOTE :  In the version of CARIS customized for this guide, you cannot save the changes. If you are using a full version of CARIS, we do not expect you to save the changes before you exit from the Editor.

o The Editor does not work with the DB Manager and therefore only operates on system-defined attributes.

o The arrangement and the label of some of the menu items are different. For example, MapQuery > Point Location in the Information Manager is Query > Point Location in the Editor. Although they are labeled differently, their operations are identical.

Other than those differences, the operation of the Editor is similar to that of the Information Manager, and many of the concepts we have learned before will be applicable here.

NOTE :  The screen captures used in some of the examples might look different due to changes you might have made to the database.
