COMMISSION 4: Positioning & Applications

Sub-Commission 4.3: GNSS Measurement of the Atmosphere

Working Group 4.3.3: NWP for Positioning

Major Tasks to be Completed

  • 1. Evaluate state of the art and to report on the progress achieved so far
    • 1.A Generate a list of publications related to the topic
      -> to be published on WG web site
    • 1.B. Identify and summarize major contributions
      -> to be published on WG web site
  • 2. Concatenate the terminology used by both meteorological and geodetic communities.
    • Generate a glossary with contribution from both the meteorological and the geodetic participants of the WG
      -> to be published on WG web site
  • 3. Study various technical aspects of using Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) model data to map the effect of troposphere on space geodetic signals.
    This might be just an overall description of the purpose of the WG, but it can also be split into two different focus areas:
    • 3.A. Improved estimation of zenith delays
      -> paper(s) in JoG
    • 3.B. Improved mapping functions
      -> paper(s) in JoG
  • 4. Test and sediment procedures related to ray-tracing through NWP data layers.
    • 4.A. Investigations on alternatives to raytracing (functional expressions, gradients etc.)
      -> paper(s) in JoG
    • 4.B. Investigations on methods for spatial and temporal interpolation in NWP fields
      -> paper(s) in JoG
  • 5. Suggest quality control criteria to be used for assessing the quality of tropospheric data and results obtained from them.
    • A list of suggestions to quality control criteria should be generated based on work packages 1 and 3, considering important parameters and required quality of these
      -> report to be published on WG web site
  • 6. Report on the progress achieved during the two years on of the WG
    • This is the final report of the WG. Will be a summary of the progress achieved, including a list of publications produced by members of the WG
      -> to be published on WG web site
      -> to be presented at the IUGG Scientific Assembly
      -> to be published in a special issue of JoG.
