A traditional event at The Institute of Navigation GNSS+ meeting every year is "UNB Night." During ION GNSS+ 2014 in Tampa, Florida, GGE faculty members, alumni, and friends got together at Jackson's Bistro for a chance to catch up with each other over some good food and a few libations.

The department held its annual pizza party on 9 September to welcome new and returning students to GGE. This year was special, as we unveiled the new undergraduate computing lab. The lab was sponsored by the Engineering Program Fund and the GGE Department.

The department said farewell to Steve Brucker, a research assistant with the Ocean Mapping Group, on August 28. Steve joined GGE as an undergraduate in 2001, and joined the Ocean Mapping Group (OMG) after sitting in on 3353. Over the past decade, Steve has been instrumental in getting every field program up and running, usually from scratch. He has rebuilt the OMG's survey launch, the Heron, twice. Once, after it sank in Quebec City in 2005, and a second time in 2010 when it needed to be refit for a new field program on the West Coast. Steve has also looked after every one of our Arctic Programs on board the CCGS Amundsen, CCGS Henry Larsen, CCGS Nahidik and the M/V Nuliajuk. Most recently Steve was on board the Amundsen last year during the tragedy of the helicopter crash in the waters of McClure Strait (near Banks Island, about 670 kilometres west of Resolute Bay). He volunteered to stay on board and led the mapping component of the successful recovery of the aircraft. For that he was awarded the Coastguard Commissioner's Commendation. We would like to wish Steve good luck in his future endeavours. (Photo: Terry Arsenault, 2014-August-28)

Professor Juraj Janak, head of the Geodesy Department of Slovak Technical University, spent one month at UNB working with the Geoid Group. He brought his son Martin to help him along. The Group had a very intense and productive month researching methods of continuing gravity data from the Earth's surface down to the geoid in the area of Auvergne, France. This research will ultimately allow more accurate determination of vertical datums.
