Professor Adam Chrzanowski Receives the Highest Academic Honour: Doctor Honoris Causa

A native of Poland, Dr. Chrzanowski completed his doctoral studies before coming to UNB in 1964 as a Professor of Surveying Engineering. From 1991-1995, he served as Chairman of the Department of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering. Today he is the Director of the Canadian Centre for Geodetic Engineering at UNB Fredericton and holds the honorary rank of Professor Emeritus in Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering.

In 2002, Dr Chrzanowski was bestowed with Doctoral honoris causa by the Warminsko-Mazurski University in Olsztyn, Poland. The ceremony, which was a central inauguration of the 2002/2003 academic year for the Polish Republic, featured the President of the Polish Republic Aleksander Kwasniewki as special guest speaker. In his remarks, President Kwasniewski extended his personal thanks and appreciation to Dr. Chrzanowski for his contributions to Polish-Canadian co-operation in research and development.

Dr. Chrzanowski has been instrumental in building the international reputation of the Department of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering at UNB. He is recognized throughout the world as an expert in engineering and mining surveys of high precision. Dr. Chrzanowski has served as a consultant to a number of high profile research and industrial projects and has held several visiting professorships appointments. He co-founded the International Society of Mine Surveying. Since 1986 he chairs the International Study Group on High Precision Deformation, has published over 300 papers, and coauthored several books on geodetic engineering, urban and mining surveys.

In 1996, he was awarded the Knights' Cross of the Order of Merit by Lech Wal?a, the President of the Polish Republic, for fostering scientific exchanges between Canada and Poland. Since 1999, he has held an honorary professorship of the Warminsko-Mazurski University in Poland. In 1985, he was given a Professor honoris causa at The Technical Geodesy University in Wuhan, China. Dr. Chrzanowski is an honorary member of Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of New Brunswick, the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping, and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineering Surveyors, as well as a member of the Canadian Institute of Geomatics.

In 2001, Dr. Chrzanowski was elected a foreign member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences in recognition of his professional contributions and achievement to the field of surveying engineering, particularly engineering and mining surveying.
